sdl translationGlobal company SDL has released a series of new machine translation (MT) capabilities to its Language platform to help companies tackle the high volume of information needing translations.

Machine Translation (MT) is a sub-field of computational linguistics that uses software to translate text or speech from one spoken language to another. In today’s globalised world, more and more businesses, be they e-commerce or social media sites, are resorting to using MT to deal with multi-lingual customers.

SDL has enhanced the ability of its SDL BeGlobal machine translation software in combination with SDL BeGlobal Trainer software to deliver more accurate and secure translation across the entire SDL translation platform. The company says it sees the translation challenge facing companies not unlike the big data challenge and have therefore dubbed this a 'Big Language' problem.

According to Keith Laska, CEO of the SDL Language Technologies division, it was becoming increasingly imperative to provide tools that allow accurate translation on the fly.

"Our mission is to eliminate barriers to global communication by helping solve Big Language challenges within every industry," Laska explained in a statement.

With SDL’s new Language Platform capabilities, enterprises and language service providers will be able to easily and securely train the SDL BeGlobal machine translation software with SDL BeGlobal Trainer to deliver higher-quality automated translations and expand the types of content that can be translated. This includes real-time content such as chat, email and social media. Additionally, MT is now seamlessly integrated across the entire set of language technologies in the platform – including SDL WorldServer, SDL TMS, SDL GroupShare and SDL Trados Studio - leveraging solid, well-documented APIs.

SDL feels that the enhancements it has released will help small and big enterprises to create global competitive advantage through a holistic, end-to-end platform of SDL translation solutions.

Though MT has been around for years, the field clearly has sceptics and supporters. Some doubt whether it's possible to deliver an accurate machine translation, while others swear by it.  Some of the benefits of MT are:

  • Human translators have a draft to start work with instead of starting each new translation from scratch.
  • While most translations will require some editing, MT translated documents turn out to be quite accurate.
  • At a minimum, key terms in a document are translated correctly.
